Let's Get Personal ... and Weird: How to Show the Unique Side of Your Brand

Do you ever discover a brand, or an influencer, or a celebrity and you instantly feel a connection? Do you wonder why you gravitate towards certain brands? Or stop to think about why you feel like that actress just gets you? It’s likely because you’re relating to some of their personal interests - or their weird.

Everyone has something “weird” or specific that they are passionate about or have some kind of interest in. For me, my weird can be found in my dog, Decoy. As one of my first models, Decoy has quite the online presence and he is always by my side. So over the years many of my friends have given me items like mugs, socks, and even dishes all with dachshunds on them. For self-made millionaire and business guru, Jenna Kutcher, her “weird” is her self-professed love of macaroni and cheese.

These things can be endearing to your audience and being open about that one specific thing that is unique to you may be what is attracting your ideal client. And that “weird” or unique thing about you, that something close to your heart which also inspires your brand, can be brought out through photography.

When people imagine the rundown of a personal branding or headshot session, they probably consider their wardrobe choices and bringing typical props like laptops, flowers, notebooks, pens, a camera if they’re a photographer, some workout gear if they own a gym, and so on.

But I really like to go beyond the typical headshot/branding experience and capture at least a few what might be considered “off brand” shots. And many times, these turn out to be some of my clients favorite images. And when you share these more personal images, your ideal client is likely to say, “I get her and she gets me.”

It gives your audience a peek behind the curtain of your brand so that they get to know you. And if they feel like they know you and they can relate to you, they’re more likely to buy your product or services
