Do This One Thing for Better SEO
The other day I was on Google and searched, “Boston branding photographer” in images. I was psyched to see that two of my photos showed up high on the first page of results! How did that happen? I’m going to share with you the one thing that I did to improve my SEO. And you can do it too.
If you’re scratching your head asking, “What’s SEO?” Let me break it down first and then we’ll get to the good stuff. SEO stands for search engine optimization. It is how you get people to your website.
Now, back to that one thing that I promise will help you get more website traffic. All you have to do is change the title, filename or alt text of the images on your website to a variety of keywords that are best for your brand. That is it!
When you take a photo it is automatically given a filename like IMG_001. Going in and changing that text from that generic image name to a keyword or phrase will help to improve your standing in search engines.
If your website is on Squarespace, here is how you can change the image filename:
Step 1:
In your content blocks, click on “Image”.
Step 2:
When you insert the image, there will be a small box that will appear on the right side of the page marked, “Filename (Optional)”.
Step 3:
Enter your keywords for your image and press “Apply”.
Now, if you aren’t sure what your keywords are, there are a few ways to find them. The simplest way is to brainstorm terms that your ideal clients would search on Google. Other useful tools to find keywords related to your brand would be Ubersuggest or Google Keyword Planner. You can also think about what hashtags you use on social media in your captions.
Take those keywords and phrases and change your image filenames. For my Boston-based branding photography business a main keyword that I use as an image title is “Boston branding photographer.” A home organizer in the Boston area may use "Boston home organizer."
And now that you know how to find your keywords, change the titles of your images and your website is booming with traffic, you’re going to need updated photos and headshots for your brand. Click here to book your next branding/headshot session!
