When to add Hair & Makeup to Your Brand Photography Session
Your brand photos are one of the most important investments you can make for your business. They are the first thing potential clients see, meaning they can make a big difference in whether or not they decide to work with you. That's why it's important to make sure your brand photos represent you and your business in the best possible light. One of the best ways to do this can be to have your hair and makeup done professionally. But is it really worth the investment? Here are four questions to ask yourself about when to add hair and makeup to your brand photography session.
1) Are you happy with your hair and makeup when you do it yourself?
Whether or not you are happy with your hair and makeup when you do it yourself should definitely influence your decision of whether or not to hire a hair and makeup artist for your shoot. If you are confident in your makeup and hair skills and you are able to achieve the look you want on your own, then there is no need to hire a professional. However, if you are unsure of your makeup and hair skills or if you want to achieve a more polished and professional look, then hiring a makeup and hair artist is a good option.
2) Does it make sense for your brand or your shoot style?
Many of us work at home and don't always have makeup or hair done. In fact, many of us are sitting around in leggings and a sweatshirt, hair in a messy bun and nothing but moisturizer on our faces. So if your brand involves working with an audience who really couldn’t care less about looks, then it may not be an important investment for you. It may also feel inauthentic to you during the shoot if you’re all glammed up when really that’s not what your audience expects. That being said, a good makeup artist (and I only work with the best) can give you a natural look that will simply make you appear polished and put together. However, if you are someone who works in a luxury market or with a clientele that expects to see someone more glamorous, then consider including it in your shoot.
Adding hair and makeup also depends on the type of shoot. If you are doing a headshot or portrait session, then having professional hair and makeup done can help you to look your best. If you are doing a more casual shoot, then doing your own makeup and hair may be perfectly fine.
3) Do you have uneven skin tone or tend to get red easily?
If you have uneven skin tone or tend to get red easily, having your makeup done professionally for your shoot can be a great way to ensure that you look and feel your best in front of the camera. A professional makeup artist can help to even out your skin tone and reduce redness. They know the right products and techniques to use to create a flawless complexion. They will consider your skin type, skin tone, and the overall style of the shoot when creating a look for you. Just make sure you communicate your skin concerns and any allergies you have to your makeup artist before they get started.
4) Do you want peace of mind?
You are already investing in your brand with a brand photography session so adding hair and makeup to your shoot may give you that extra peace of mind. When clients decide to add on hair and makeup, I actually coordinate with the hair and makeup team to ensure everyone is where they need to be the day of the shoot.
Adding this service onto your shoot allows you to focus solely on the session and not have to worry about your hair and makeup. You’ll also get the look you want - glamorous, natural, or somewhere in between. And since you know you’ll look your best for your shoot, you’ll feel more confident and that shows up on camera.
My Recommendations
If you’ve decided that adding hair and makeup is the best way to go for your next shoot, then I have a few recommendations for you! These are my ride or die hair and makeup artists that I will bring in every time I have a client request a glam team. First off, there is Tara of Tada Makeup who is right across the hall from my studio in Reading, making the entire experience super convenient! However I also love working with Boston Beauty Network. They have a separate location but they come to my studio for clients.
Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to add hair and makeup to your shoot is up to you. If you are unsure of what to do, it is always a good idea to consult with your photographer as they can help you decide what will look best in your photos and what fits within your budget.
